My initial impulse for this was: words before pictures.  Again, this mostly began as a fight within me to retain the writer who was getting...cut in front of...by an emerging photographer.  I had a chip on my shoulder about photography being an easier, softer way out of capturing and expressing the moment.  I laid out the Submission form and first few Submissions accordingly.

After receiving feedback during the initial testing period, I began to question that original impulse.  Be it an evolution in thought process or just second guessing myself, I then thought of placing the image before the words, for the following reasons:

  • It keeps with the order of the formula of 1 (picture): 1000 (words).  Respect the name on the door.
  • It speaks better to a great notion of the thing: that there is a story behind or to the side or after the image.  Regardless of the direction, the story should follow the image so as to elaborate on it.
  • If the words come before the image, then when it comes time to view that image, the reader is told to some extent what to see.  This removes both the wonder and impulse of the first impression, as well as those quite possibly being blown apart by the words that follow.  I like the idea of not judging books by their covers  or images by what you see.  In the moment it is different, but it is a great thing to be wrong.
